All that God is and does is Good!
The Bible says of God: "You are good, and what you do is good; teach me your decrees" (Psalm 119:68).
What an encouragement to us as we launch into a new year, the knowledge that God is good…….. God is good. He is not just partially good, or occasionally good, but he is goodness itself. As John reminds us, “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:15). God’s perfect character does not have even the slightest shade of imperfection or sinfulness about it.
Furthermore, the Bible teaches us that God is working all things together for good to those who love him (Romans 8:28), and the sanctifying work he performs in us by his spirit is “according to his good pleasure” (Philippians 2:13).
Because He is good He must always do what is good. Jesus spent His whole ministry demonstrating the goodness of God. Peter said this of him: “You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good, and healing all who were oppressed by the devil; for God was with Him.” Acts 10:38
The goodness of God is continuously on display all around us both physically and spiritually. A.W. Tozer said this of God: “Divine goodness as one of God’s attributes, is self-caused, infinite, perfect, and eternal. Since God is immutable He never varies in the intensity of His loving-kindness. He has never been kinder than He now is, nor will He ever be less kind. He is no respecter of persons but makes His sun to shine on the evil as well as the good, and sends His rain on the just and on the unjust. The cause of His goodness is in Himself; the recipients of His goodness are all His beneficiaries, without merit, and without recompense.”
As we begin a new year, let us engage in the following three:
a. Let us reflect upon God’s goodness and give thanks from grateful hearts. The psalmist instructs us to: “Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good.” (Psalm 136:1)
b. Let us experience the goodness of God in 2016. Listen to David’s words of encouragement to us: “O taste and see that the LORD is good.” (Psalm 34:8)
c. Let us publicly reaffirm God’s goodness as instructed by the psalmist: “Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him, bless His name. For the LORD is good; His lovingkindness is everlasting and His faithfulness to all generations.” (Psalm 100:4-5)
God is good all the time……….all the time God is good!
